{"id":7371,"date":"2013-11-03T15:38:59","date_gmt":"2013-11-03T14:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sarahjyoung.com\/site\/?p=7371"},"modified":"2014-07-31T14:05:47","modified_gmt":"2014-07-31T14:05:47","slug":"new-article-knowing-russias-convicts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sarahjyoung.com\/site\/2013\/11\/03\/new-article-knowing-russias-convicts\/","title":{"rendered":"New article: Knowing Russia&#8217;s Convicts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week has finally seen the publication of my article &#8216;Knowing Russia&#8217;s Convicts: the Other in Narratives of Imprisonment and Exile in the Late Imperial Era&#8217; in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/toc\/ceas20\/current#.UnZa3JQRB9k\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Europe-Asia Studies<\/em><\/a>. It&#8217;s a special issue based on the <a title=\"Villains and Victims\" href=\"https:\/\/sarahjyoung.com\/site\/2010\/04\/08\/villains-and-victims\/\">Villains and Victims<\/a> workshop which I wrote about previously, and it contains some great articles that really reflect what an amazing event that was.<\/p>\n<p>My contribution, comparing attitudes to peasant convicts in Dostoevsky&#8217;s <em>Notes from the House of the Dead<\/em>, Chekhov&#8217;s <em>Sakhalin Island\u00a0<\/em>and Kennan&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Siberia and the Exile System<\/em>, relating particularly to the question of knowledge, represents my first shift backwards from Gulag narratives into pre-revolutionary prison\/exile texts, which has subsequently generated a whole new approach to the subject.
